Parliamentary Committees approved the Report
On 22 January 2008 combined Committees of Polish Parliament: for State
Supervision and for Social Policy and Family, which debated under the
chairmanship of Arkadiusz Czartoryski and Sławomir Piechota at the building of
Parliament, approved the Chief Labour Inspector’s Report on the National Labour
Inspectorate’s activity in 2006. The document was presented by the head of the
labour inspection Bożena Borys-Szopa.

The Labour Protection Council’s position on the Report was presented to the
combined Committees by the Council’s Chairman, MP Stanisław Szwed. He
underlined that the Council’s position included a positive assessment of the
inspection’s achievements in the reporting year. The institution’s activities
were carried out in line with the earlier adopted programme; at the same time
the inspection undertook a lot of unplanned and intervention initiatives (among
others, comprehensive inspections of retail trade networks, security service
providers or companies working for the mining sector).
A positive opinion on the Report was also included in a speech presented by
Teresa Piotrowska, Vice-Chairperson of the Committee for State Supervision.
– What deserves particular recognition – stated the Member of Parliament – is
the consistency and growing effectiveness of labour inspectors in enforcing the
provisions which guarantee decent working conditions to employees. National
Labour Inspectorate’s actions in this area bring about concrete effects.
Among the tangible results achieved by NLI thanks to the accomplishment of
statutory tasks in 2006, Teresa Piotrowska especially mentioned the elimination
of immediate hazards to life and health of almost 60 thousand employees and the
enforcement of payment of 140 million zlotys of overdue benefits to about 220
thousand employees. Referring to improved legal measures, introduced in mid 2007
by the new Act on NLI, she expressed the hope that each subsequent year would
see increased effectiveness of the labour inspectorate.

In the discussion, Members of Parliament highly assessed the presented Report;
they emphasised efforts and effectiveness of labour inspectors who act to ensure
compliance with the law in labour relations. They approved of preventive
initiatives undertaken by our inspection on a larger scale; also the NLI’s
training activity won their recognition.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Labour Inspectors: Roman Giedrojæ,
Iwona Hickiewicz and Anna Tomczyk.
