Congress of International Association of Labour Inspection
The 12th Congress and General Assembly of International
Association of Labour Inspection (IALI) were held at the seat of International
Labour Office in Geneva from 9 to 11 June 2008. National Labour Inspectorate was
represented by: Bożena Borys-Szopa, Chief Labour Inspector and Robert Jaworski,
Head of International Relations Unit.

The Association, established in 1972, has 112 member organizations from 80
countries worldwide. The overriding objective of its activity is to improve work
safety and health and working conditions in order to reduce the number of
accidents, occupational diseases, mitigate conflicts and limit the costs for
economic entities. IALI is also concerned with promoting the dignity of man’s
work, increasing work productivity and creating appropriate environment for the
development of economic activity.
On the first day of the congress, Bożena Borys-Szopa presented a paper “Decent
work – challenges for labour inspection”, on the subject of NLI’s broadly
understood promotional and informational activity targeted at social partners.
The most interesting parts of the session included approval by the Congress of
IALI’s “Plan of work” for the next 3-year term. It stipulates further
strengthening of the IALI’s potential by providing its members with tools and
various forms of assistance indispensable to carry out their work in a
professional manner. One of the documents presented and discussed during the
meeting was “Global Code of Integrity for Labour Inspection”. It was developed
over the last three years and talked over at many international conferences and
working meetings of the IALI’s Executive Committee. The “Code of Integrity”
comprises a number of ethical principles which every labour inspector and every
labour inspection authority should follow while fulfilling their mission.

During IALI General Assembly, held on the third day of the meeting, reports on
the Association’s activity and financial reports for the previous term 2005-2008
were presented. The session culminating point were the elections of the IALI’s
new Executive Committee, comprising President and eight Vice-Presidents. Michele
Patterson from the Australian labour inspection was elected IALI’s President for
the next term.
