Awards for organisers of safe work The Chief Labour Inspector presented awards and distinctions to the winners of the sixteenth edition of the National Labour Inspectorate’s prestigious competition “Employer – organiser of safe work”. The ceremonial gala was held at the Royal Castle on 18 November 2009. The winners of this year’s edition, held under the honorary patronage of the Speaker of Parliament Bronisław Komorowski, traditionally received statuettes “Mecum Tutissimus Ibis” and were included in the “Golden List of Employers”, recommended by the labour inspectorate as an example to follow. Leaders of safe work, who qualified to the central phase of the competition, received congratulatory letters during the ceremony. Awards and distinctions were presented by the head of National Labour Inspectorate Tadeusz Jan Zając, accompanied by the chairperson of the Labour Protection Council MP Izabela Katarzyna Mrzygłocka. In this year’s edition, the chapter composed of the National Labour Inspectorate’s experts and representatives of leading employers’ organizations, such as: Business Centre Club, Polish Confederation of Private Employers “Lewiatan”, Confederation of Polish Employers and Polish Craft Association chose 8 winners and recommended 10 entrepreneurs to be honoured with distinctions. It is worth noticing that this time the winners in the group of small enterprises were those creating high risks and risks of a major industrial accident. The large companies were honoured for systemic management of work safety. - I would like to express the hope that in running business activity the guarantee of safe work will be as important as a known brand, product quality and profits. The guarantee of safe work is confirmed by the presented statuette with engraved words “Mecum Tutissimus Ibis”, which means “You will be the safest with me”. When talking about the winners, the head of National Labour Inspectorate emphasised that in order to ensure safe working conditions they systematically modernise workrooms and sanitary facilities, invest in purchasing the most modern machines, equipment and technology, which guarantee compliance with the world safety standards. They are aware that a work accident causes much higher costs than preventative activities. Workers’ health is a capital on which they build their future. - What deserves special attention are “good practices” and the best experience transferred to Poland by foreign employers operating in our market. They undoubtedly are a valuable input into developing the culture and philosophy of work safety in our country – stated Tadeusz Jan Zając. He wished the winners more success in economic activity and achievement of their objectives. The Chief Labour Inspector wished the workers that in their professional life they meet only such employers who are organisers of safe work. - Let me express appreciation for the organisers of this competition. They promote compliance with high standards of work safety culture among Polish businesses, and the approach that employers observe statutory obligations to their employees. Each edition of this competition proves that there are more and more companies basing their economic success on work organisation which takes account of the needs of employees and on the use of equipment and technologies which increase worker safety and comfort – said MP Izabela Katarzyna Mrzygłocka. On behalf of the Labour Protection Council she wished the winners many further successes in conducing economic activity. She also expressed the hope that received awards and distinctions would be an inspiration for them to introduce additional, more perfect solutions and use of best practices which contribute to worker safety. - An economic crisis showed how untrue is the statement that one can live without work –observed Minister Jolanta Fedak. – Work is the basis of the nation’s wealth and individual prosperity. Therefore, paradoxically, the crisis confirmed the value and dignity of man's work. I cordially thank all employers, who follow humanistic ideas, care about individuals and their working environment so as to make them feel good at it, make room for their achievement of professional aspirations and use of their competence and skills. Jolanta Fedak emphasised that employers who prepare safe workplaces for employees would also win while competing on the labour market. She said that in a few years’ time less numerous generations would enter the labour market and their choice of employment in one company or another would depend on the quality of offered working conditions. The Minister of Labour thanked the competition organisers for consistent popularisation of good practices in the area of work safety. During the ceremony at the Royal Castle, besides the Chief Labour Inspector’s awards, the organisers of safe work also received special distinctions awarded by social partners of the National Labour Inspectorate. They were presented by: President of the All-Poland Agreement of Trade Unions Jan Guz and Vice-president of Business Centre Club Zbigniew Żurek. While thanking for the awards, the winners of this year’s edition of the competition “Employer - Organiser of Safe Work” mentioned the involvement of their workers in creating safety policies in enterprises; they also emphasised labour inspectorate’s assistance, especially in the form of consultancy and supervision, in achieving success. President of Toyota in Wałbrzych, Kenji Manabe – winner in the category of large enterprises, said at the gala: - I am exceptionally pleased that we are receiving such an award exactly on the 10th anniversary of opening our enterprise in Poland. I really thank you for appreciating the work of over 2 thousand workers who are currently employed by us. I thank the National Labour Inspectorate – District Labour Inspectorate in Wrocław for support. This is not the end of our road, as we are only halfway. We shall continue our efforts to raise safety levels in our company. The gala ceremony at the Royal Castle in Warsaw was attended by: representatives of the Polish Parliament, Labour Protection Council, authorities dealing with supervision and inspection of working conditions, scientific milieu, associations active in the area of labour protection, trade unions, employers’ organisations and the National Labour Inspectorate.
